"I Spy" Field Trip

After the temple adventure, Robert went back to work and I took the boys down to Provo. The author/photographer of the "I Spy" children's books, Walter Wick, was at the BYU Museum of Art. He gave a short lecture about how he put the scenes together and photographs them. Christopher, Matthew, and Ethan even got to help him explain how the contraption picture works. They were very enthusiastic.

It is very fascinating to see how he puts all the pieces together and all the time and detail that is put into it. It is incredible. Check out his web page: http://www.walterwick.com/index.htm
You can see on his web page how they build the sets and photograph them. The detail, color, and brilliance is breathtaking. Kenzie met up with us and was shocked to find out that what looks like a very vibrant drawing/painting is actually a photograph with a ton of artistic detail in the scene.
I bought each boy a new book and had them signed by Wick. My boys love those books. Christopher has even designed his own "I Spy" scene and had me photograph it. Of course it didn't photograph that well.
I asked Mr. Wick what his parents did to foster his imagination and creativity. He said they just let them go off and explore and make things. That is a hard thing to do in this day and age and I am a control freak and don't want extra messes so I guess I need to relax a little and let the boys have a little creative freedom! I can really see my boys using their creativity in similiar ways when they grow up.
